Maison Bâtard is a French restaurant and hospitality destination set within a landmark heritage site on Bourke Street, Melbourne. Conceived by Chris Lucas as a legacy project, the venue spans four levels including expansive dining rooms, an oyster bar, a late-night supper club and an elegant rooftop terrace, offering a modern interpretation of French culture through an Australian lens.
Anchored in Les Contraires—a celebration of contrasts—the identity moves between worlds, at once sophisticated and subversive.
At the core is a distinctive brandmark and insignia, extending across menus, stationery, and collateral to unify the guest experience across the four venues. The identity is enriched by Andrea Ferolla’s illustrations, which bring a chic, romantic sensibility with a subtle mischievous edge, and by the curation of two art works by Claire Fontaine, whose conceptual practice adds cultural depth and provocation to the dining environment.
Maison Bâtard embodies a spirit of refinement and irreverence, establishing itself as a bold new icon in Melbourne’s hospitality landscape. The restaurant was awarded Best New Restaurant 2025 in the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards, celebrating its innovative approach and exceptional dining experience.
